Usually the u/s are overestimates if anything. I got measured at 20, 24 and every 3 weeks during the 3rd trimester and every time they pointed towards me having a 9lb+ baby and he was only 8lb 3.5oz.
Even if your baby is larger, you are much more likely to avoid a c-section if you go into labor naturally. My MFM said this constantly which caused me a lot of anxiety, but I got lucky and didn't end up having to get induced. 38.5 is pretty early to have expected your body to be ready for this on it's own. I personally didn't want an induction but was willing to do it if necessary and my MFM doesn't pull babies early during otherwise good pregnancies and I was very thankful for that otherwise I don't think things would have ended up so well.
Another thing they said after my delivery was over was that it actually helped that my baby was on the larger side. They said if he'd been 6 lbs I'd have had him out in 2 pushes and things wouldn't have had time to stretch and I'd have torn, but as things were, he was just the right size to provide for steady, controlled pushing.
I think it sounds like you want to wait... I also think the thing to remember is that babies have been born from the beginning of time- he knows when he's ready. If it were me, I'd wait to go into labor naturally, mostly because just as Amanda said, you're chances of having a c-section increase dramatically with induction & epidural. I would also not have my membranes stripped or water broken. I'm glad to hear that your doc agreed that he's probably not too big to deliver, but OBs are trained surgeons, they are taught to see only the things that can go wrong during labor and not to see labor as a completely nature process that doesn't need interfering with (not that your doc isn't great, it's just true). That's just my two cents, I hope it doesn't come across as "preachy" :o)
Love the belly pics, and in case you don't already read ababymaybe.com: Bev didn't have any stretch marks during pregnancy, but they showed up afterwards!! They will fade overtime and eventually be noticeable only to you :o)
I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you and your family. Will be thinking about you these last couple of weeks.
If it helps at all, I had several friends who opted for inductions b/c of their ob's suggestion and had very very long labors - 2 out of 3 ended up in C-section and all three of them had babies that were not nearly as large (overestimates by at least 1-1.5lbs) as the OB thought. Do what feels right for your body!
